Let's get Metaphysical: a Debate on Religion and Spirituality
Okay, I realize that many people stayed away from the previous debate on abortion because it touches a nerve that most peoplecan't comfortably express without becoming accusatory. Kudos to those who did express their opinions politely and eloquently though, thank you. Here is the next topic up for debate. Same rules apply here as before, so let's start the debate.

I look at religion and spirtuality as two separate things. Religion to me, is what you are. Catholic, Morman, Baptist.... I am what you would call a non-practicing Christian. I do not have a set religion. I believe in the bible, I believe in creationism---not evolution---I believe that Jesus died on the cross to save mankind. I do not believe that you must confess your sins to a person of the cloth, that is between me and God. I believe that God is a forgiving God and that you can be forgiven in your 11th hour if you are trully repentent. I don't believe that small children are kept from Heavens gates if they are not batized. I do not believe that they are born into sin therefore are sinners. Children are innocent and have a straight path to Heaven. I believe that if you live your life right, follow God's laws, and worship him in your heart, either privately or publicly, that He will allow you into his kingdom. I also do not believe that we just wallow in our graves until revelations. I believe we go to Heaven or hell straight away. I think that we must attone for our sins there on the other side but we go to our destination. I believe in one God---it doesn't matter who he is called, all people who believe shall go to his kingdom. I also believe in karma. What goes around comes around. I believe in reincarnation. Why wouldn't your spirit want to return and live different lives. I believe in the golden rule--Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This is how I live my life. This is my belief.
ReplyDeleteWow Julie, awesome and eloquent.
ReplyDeleteOkay, well today seems like a good day to do this. First off though, I have a question regarding religious behavior I guess. Why is it that most people are only religious or spiritual during the holidays or when things suck? These people look at the calendar and say "Oh, a holiday is coming, I need to get my religion out of the closet, dust it off and shove it everyone's face just to prove to myself how devout and faithful a person I am." Why do we do this? Shouldn't we be spiritual all the time? Good times and bad, off season and on? I personally don't understand the need to try to force someone to believe what I believe. I'm not asking for you to "switch affiliations" but I would appreciate a little understanding. That being said, Ido not condemn anyone else for their chosen beliefs, I think diversity is the key to communication. I am a Pagan, currently trying to complete my year and a day of study in Wicca. I believe in a God AND Goddess, to me, the concept of the divine being ONLY male is unbalanced. I believe in Karma and have personally seen it in action. As a studying Wiccan, I believe in reincarnation, but I have been struggling to accept this part of my new beliefs. I believe that every religion is correct to it's adherants and it is a great hope of mine that all human beings can come to understand this as well.
ReplyDeleteOkay, it has been 2 weeks and only 2 of us has posted anything. I am going to close this debate and reopen it at a later date. Thanks to you who did post.
